I am not sure if this would be a good first book to learn Chinese from, but it is a great book to review what you have already learned.
And I like the fact that Ross fully incorporates traditional characters in the main text and quizzes.
Chinese Demystified: A Self-Teaching Guide
Some texts say they include traditional characters, but then you find out that including them is really an after thought and the traditional characters receive short shrift e. All the examples are only in simplified characters. But that is not the case here, all the material is in both simplified and traditional characters.
My first thought is that only a student who has had some intense initial exposure to Mandarin perhaps a month or two can truly appreciate the benefits of this handy little companion to virtually any course classroom or self-taught on the written and spoken language. The overview itself is worth the price of the book but then the student is taken on a detailed tour of the language that clearly serves to further demystify the peculiar aspects of the language so alien to foreign speakers. My advice for the beginning student is to immerse oneself in the language for a month or so, then stop and study this wonderful aid.

The brief exercises are well worth the effort as they force the student to focus on the specifics that are usually glossed over in virtually all other texts or not explained clearly enough for practical purposes. The effort is made all the more valuable by making the remainder of the student's progression into the language all the more graceful and meaningful. I have studied Mandarin and Japanese for two years and I have a background in most Western and Indo-European languages and have roamed the field as it were for the best teaching devices.
This is by far about the best there is in terms of a companion text. This review is specific for the Kindle version and I must say that, unlike many of the other reviewers, I did not have a problem with the Mandarin text as it is easy to enlarge it with a finger swipe, rendering it quite readable.
Again, the spoken aspects of the language can only be accomplished by repeated listening and imitating native speakers although you probably will never really get it just right.

Once again, I highly recommend this book to anyone who truly values learning this language in depth. Studied chinese for several years and out of many,,,many books I purchased I found this one to be the easiest to understand Kindle Edition Verified Purchase. Chinese is one the languages that I have studied intensely.
There are many books out there that teach Chinese. Without a doubt, 'Chinese Demystified' is the best one that I have come across. The explanations are all very clear, and there are numerous examples. It does not jump around; the book moves in a logical way, adding more items.
If I find there is something in particular that I want to examine, I now right where to go. It is the very best guide for tonal pronunciation I've found so far and I cannot imagine anyone getting this job done any better. You have to know a little Mandarin to start, but don't go too far into your pursuit of learning this language before you pick up this wonderful book.
I thought I understood the use of Pinyin accents and the various tonal pronunciations until I read this book. For the first time, I understand how the consonants play off the vowels.

Not just "good to know"--indispensable. From my "beginner's" experience of some three months now working very hard at learning Mandarin in order to visit my adopted daughter who has moved to Beijing and Chicago weather making it ever so easy to stay inside and study , I would recommend a language course on DVD if I had it to do over again, I would not have purchased all four sets of Rosetta Stone at once because I would have known better after the first one.

That makes it mandatory to have three other books or two other books plus flash cards. This is the place to start. Add to that the Chinese Flash Cards Kit Volumes I and II [this includes not only excellent flash cards for the Chinese characters, but also the stroke order for writing them, an excellent list of the radical with a clear indication of which radical is primary for each character--something you need to know in order to look up a word in a Chinese dictionary--but it includes DVD's with the correct pronunciation of each character, together with a cross-reference listing of each numbered card, PLUS examples of actual usage of each character.
I also recommend a book specifically addressing Chinese grammar.
