A cross between a contemporary romance and a sci-fi fantasy, this story within a story is unique and engaging, and at times, the writing brilliant, especially during the science fiction world the two main characters, Faith and Kevin, write and create together to explore their darker desires. Faith, Hope, and Charity begins a bit slowly, and I worried at first that the erotic parts would not be all that erotic.
A young couple fall in love quickly, discover they have much in common, and embark on their relationship as they discover themselves in college. But do not be fooled by the beginning chapters.
A Simple Charity
But what really stands out in this novel is the story within a story element. Not for the weak of heart, this society reads almost like great literary prose of the past in this genre, Brave New World and Fahrenheit even-- the descriptions crisp, the society eerily depicted. Erotic at times but mostly disturbing. But if you can push through it, Dalton will surprise you. It quickly becomes all worthwhile in the end, especially with the arrival of Charity, and that true eroticism I had been waiting for is finally delivered Unique, gripping, and smart, Faith, Hope, and Charity is a powerful tale that, though dark in places, manages to show the reader that true sexual fulfillment can only come with a relationship built on trust, honesty, and above all, love.
Of all the books I've written, this one was probably the most difficult. The box was a bomb designed to blow up The Swede's plane removing the last loose ends. Bernard suspected this but said nothing hoping to flush out who else was in on the plan but is forced to step in when he discovers Bret has ordered Frank's assistant to break into the box.
Bret tells Bernard that both he and the Department owe him and that he will do his best to try to give Frank's job, and a pension to Bernard when Frank retires. Bret tells Bernard he is being stupid and that Fiona really loves him and not her job. Bernard say he has asked Fiona to join him in Berlin and hopes that his children can go to school in Berlin just like he did.
